Luna Great Dane - Teaching a Great Dane to Stay Calm When People Come to the Door

For this in home Omaha dog training session, we show 2 year-old Great Dane Luna’s family how to teach a dog to calm down when people come to the door.

Of course Luna chose today to be calm when someone came to the door. Figures. But the good news is this technique to stop a dog from getting excited at the door is easy and effective if you follow the instructions I share in the free positive dog training video above. This approach is called Operant Conditioning and most dog behavior experts love using it as it gives the dog the opportunity to figure out the lesson on its own. Anyone can do it, this isn’t limited to professional Great Dane Dog Trainers.

Training a dog to calm down at the door can fix many other unwanted dog behavior problems like jumping up on people, door dashing, barking, etc. I suggested the guardians have neighbors come over to practice this approach. Doing it with real house guests is good too, but each time a guest visits and comes inside, that makes the activity even more exciting. Having neighbors come by to practice waiting for the dog to calm down, then chatting for a few moments while still outside allows the guardians to practice and lessens the excitement of people coming to the door as not all of them come inside.

In addition to teaching the dog to stay calm when people knock on the door, I shared a ton of dog behavior secrets in this in home dog training session. To help the guardians remember the highlights, we shot a roadmap to success video.
