Toby - The Secret to Stopping an Excited Puppy From Jumping Up on People at the Door

For this Omaha puppy training session we show 1 year old Wheaten – Pyrenees mix Toby who gets excited and jumps up on people who come to the door. You can learn the trick to stopping puppies and dogs from jumping up on people who come to the door in the free dog training video below.

This is one of my favorite dog behavior modification exercises as it allows the dog to learn to stop jumping on people at the door on their own. Most people try to micromanage their dog, telling them to get down, stop jumping up on guests, etc. While this approach sometimes works in the moment, it usually doesn’t stop the unwanted behavior.

Stopping dogs from jumping up on visitors this way takes practice, but once the dog gets enough reps, it learns; sitting calmly gets me attention and jumping causes people to move away and become boring.” I love hearing from clients a few weeks after the session saying “my friends and visitors were impressed that the dog didn’t jump up on them anymore.”

After sharing the secret to stopping any dog from jumping up on people when excited, we discussed a number of other tips (like how to add structure to meal time) to help Toby be an even more amazing dog (if that’s even possible). To help the humans remember everything we covered in this in home Omaha dog training session, we shot a summary video that you can check out below.
