Ziggy Cattle dog - Stopping a Little Dog With a Big Jumping on People Problem

For this Omaha dog training session we showed 2 year old Cattle Dog Ziggy’s guardians how to stop him from jumping up on people who visit his home.

As a dog behaviorist Ive found that many dog jumping problems comes from two things; not respecting boundaries and being over excited.

I called ahead with some instructions so that Ziggy’s guardians could help me show them how to stop a dog from jumping on guests. You can learn the trick to stopping dog jumping in the free dog behavior training video below.

I suggested the guardians call each other when they are on the way home so they can knock on the front door and pretend to be a guest. This will help the dog practice not jumping on people during this exciting activity.

Having friend snap neighbors come over to visit can help stop dog jumping by practicing with even more people. With enough practice, the dog learns that staying calm and quiet is what attracts the human’s attention. Best of all, this technique to stop dog jumping allows the dog to learn on his own instead of needing humans to micromanage their behavior.

There are a number of other things Ziggy’s guardians can do to stop the dog from jumping on people, most of them revolve around developing more self control. We spent the rest of the session going over ways to add structure and the importance of rewarding desired behaviors to help Ziggy behave how they want.

This session was a lot of fun. Ziggy’s guardians are a lot of fun to be around. Now that they know how to help him stop jumping on people, its simply a matter of practice.

To help the guardians remember all the other tips I shared with them in this in home dog training session, we filmed a roadmap to success video.
