For this Omaha dog training session we shared some remedial potty training tips to stop 1 year-old Pomeranian mix Winnie from having accidents in the house and how to ring a bell to say she needs to go potty.
When you have an older puppy who has accidents in the house, I always recommend doing some remedial potty training. You can get some free potty training tips by watching the positive dog training video below.
When you are doing additional potty training with a mature puppy or adult dog, consistent observation is key. In fact, I often tell people the secret to potty training an older dog is to go out with it for every bathroom break for 7-10 or so days. I know its tempting to just let the dog out on its own, but reinforcing the potty action with good timing is crucial to stopping dog accidents in the house.
Now Winnie’s situation is a little different as the guardian wants to teach her to potty on some sod on the deck as there are no stairs to the yard from the door that is most convenient for her humans. But the potty training strategy is pretty much the same. Adding some of her poop from going potty out front will help motivate Winnie to potty on the sod. Another potty training trick would be to bring in another dog to go on the sod. Dogs are very attracted to places other dogs urinate in, so this could be the ticket to getting the dog to potty in a specific place.
We covered a number of other tips in this in home Omaha dog training session. To help Winnie’s family remember them all, we filmed a roadmap to success video.
