For this Los Angeles dog training session, we worked with Stanley is a 2 year-old German Shepherd Chow mix, sharing tips to get a dog to come when called.
Although he listened inside, there were times when the dog refused to come when called while in the back yard or at the park. When a dog doesn’t come when called, I always start inside; determining if the dogs sees and respects his guardians as authority figures.
I shared a number of dog behavior tips to help create a healthy leader follower dynamic and ensure that the dog understood what his guardians wanted from him. The trick to teaching a dog to come works is first making sure the dog wants to listen to the humans.
I share secrets of getting a dog to come on command in the free positive dog training video below.
If he guardians practice this recall command exercise daily for a week or two, the dog’s days of ignoring the come command will be a thing of the past. Rewarding him inside when he comes on his own via passive training will supplement things nicely.
Stanley also showed a number of fearful behaviors so I showed his guardians a focus exercise and a few other tips to help build up his confidence. To help them remember all the things we covered, we recorded a roadmap to success video that you can watch below.
