Basil - Tips to Stop a Chihuahua From Crying When Her Human Leaves

For this Santa Monica dog training session, we help Basil, a 4 year-old Chihuahua who gets upset and verbally protests by crying when one of her guardians leaves the home.

We tried to recreate Basil’s crying (or singing, as her guardian had labeled it) to show a before-video, but just like taking your car to the shop for an inconsistent problem, she wasn’t going to do it when desired. No matter, as Santa Monica’s resident dog behavior expert, I dont have to see an unwanted dog behavior to fix it.

I pulled out my camera and handed it to one of the guardians so I could share tips to stop a dog from crying when left alone.

Stopping a dog from crying when you leave is a more abstract dog behavior issue. There were many small things that contributed to this behavior. I made a number of suggestions off camera that will help; petting with a purpose, rewarding desired behaviors when offered voluntarily, enforcing rules consistently and building up her confidence by teaching her new tricks and commands – especially those that require control like the stay or waiting for permission to eat treats waiting on the dog’s paws or nose!

By making small changes in their day to day lives, the guardian will be able to transition Basil into thinking the human is the leader. Once she flips the leader follower dynamic this way, the dog will feel more confident and less stressed when the human leaves. And anyone can do this, its not limited to professional Chihuahua dog trainers.

To help the guardians remember all the positive dog training tips we shared in this in home Santa Monica dog training session, we shot a roadmap to success video that you can check out below.
