For this Omaha dog training session we share tips to stop 1 year-old Miniature Goldendoodle Addy from barking at people outside her yard or rushing the door for guests.
We did the session outside because, CoronaVirus. Addy doesn’t have a fenced in yard so her guardian uses a teether. If you dont have a fence, a teether is a nice alternate option. However, dogs can become frustrated when teethered for too long, usually unsupervised. Addy is always with her guardian when teethered fortunatley, but long term use can cause some dogs to grow frustrated. I showed the guardian the temporary fencing I often suggest to clients as another option.
Stopping dogs from barking at people outside the yard is a pretty common request I get as Omaha’s residential Dog Behavior Expert. But before I shared tips to stop dogs from barking in the yard, I went over a number of other dog behavior topics that will help motivate Addy to want to listen to her guardian.
I like to use counterconditioning to stop dogs who bark at strangers if the situation allows it. I handed the guardian my phone so I could demonstrate how to use counterconditioning to teach a dog it doesnt need to bark at people.
This is an easy way to stop a dog from barking at new people as the dog not barking is what gets them the reward. This secret to stopping dog barking is easy, but needs to be practiced often over a week or three to become most effective. With the busy walking trail outside the house, the guardian should have plenty of time to practice this trick to stop dog barking.
Another situation that caused Addy to bark was people coming to the door of the house. We headed inside so I could show the guardian how to train a dog to move away from the door when people knock. You can learn how to teach a dog to move away when people knock on the door by watching the free positive dog training video below.
This is another easy exercise that just needs practice. This practice will be more of a challenge for the guardian with CoronaVirus and social distancing reducing visits so she may need to enlist the help of her friends and neighbors.
The good news is both of these counterconditioning exercises to prevent dog barking can be done by anyone, even if you are not a professiona Mini Goldendoodle dog trainer.
To help the guardian remember everything we covered in this in home Omaha dog training session, we filmed a roadmap to success video that you can watch below.
