Zeus Coton de Tulear - Potty Training a Puppy to Stop Accidents in the House

In this Omaha puppy training session we did some puppy potty training to stop 6 month-old Mal-Shi from having accidents in the house.

Zeus and his guardians recently moved out of a home with a person who thought yelling and punishing the dog was appropriate. While it can certainly be frustrating when a puppy has accidents in the house, yelling or punishing it will only make matters worse.

Its important to remember that dogs having accidents are not going potty inside with bad intentions. Usually its a case of the guardians not communicating and potty training the dog in a way the dog understands and is motivated to do.

After asking the guardian some questions about Zeus’ potty training, Im pretty sure he was confused about the whole situation. To stop accidents in the house, I handed my phone to the guardian so I could share tips and tricks to stop a pup from having accidents in the house.

Stopping a puppy from having accidents in the house is all about good observation, timing and positive rewards for success. And remember if you are potty training a puppy and you take too long to take it out or loose sight of the puppy and it has an accident, you are the one to blame; so don’t get mad at the dog.

Training a pup to potty outside isn’t hard to do if you use modern, positive puppy training methods. This way the dog is motivated to go outside which means it will protest and make a fuss if you don’t realize they need to go out.

Although we focused on potty training the puppy in this session, I also shared a number of dog behavior tips to help with problems like nipping, not coming when called, how to train the puppy by petting it at the right time, etc. I also recommended the guardian enroll him in our puppy class as early puppy socialization is super important up until a pup is 9 months old (although its important after as well).

To help the guardian remember all the puppy training tips we went over in this at home puppy training session, we shot a roadmap to success video that you can check out below.
