Tips for a Great Dane Who Doesn’t Always Come Inside When Called

For this Omaha dog training session we share a tip to stop 1 year-old Great Dane Winthorpe from refusing to come inside when called.

Winthorpe is a big boy, and he knows it. While he listens to the family’s father, he doesn’t listen as well for the mother or daughter; sometimes biting at their clothes to disagree, demand attention or just have some fun messing with them.

I spent a good portion of the session going over ways to flip the leader follower dynamic using dog psychology and positive dog training tips I have acquired working as a dog behaviorist. Id like to see them start petting with a purpose (especially the females) and playing a little aloof / hard to get. Sometimes if a dog thinks it has us “on demand,” they can get a little rambunctious as puppies.

This rambunctious behavior is likely related to the dog’s habit of not coming inside when called. Training a dog to come will help, but flipping the leader follower dynamic should not be discounted in this case either. And luckily for me, you don’t have to be a professional Great Dane trainer to fix this problem. Even a lowly Dog Behaviorist like me help!

Its going to take some practice, but if the family members follow the positive dog training tips I share in the above free dog training video, they should get Winthorpe to start coming inside when called.

The family can reinforce the recall (come command) through passive training (petting Winthorpe when he comes to them on his own inside the house), provided he isn’t trying to bite at their hands or clothes. The more they reward the dog for coming when called, the more likely he will be to repeat that behavior in the future.

I wish I would have stayed longer for this in home dog training session, It turns out the family’s father and I went to Middle School together. Its been so long I didn’t recognize him / didn’t make the connection until the end of the session! I had memories and nostalgia dripping in front of me on the drive home.
