MycroftTrillian - Great Dog Training Tips to Help Two Dogs Get Along

In this Omaha dog training session we worked with a pair of Akitas, one-year-old Trillian and four-year old Mycroft to help the two dogs get along and help Trillian get settled into her new home.

After I arrived I learned that the guardians already had quite a few rules and structure in their home, which was fantastic. After commending them for that we discussed what their main dog behavior issues were. One of their main concerns was integrating their recently adopted dog into their home.

When they first got Trillian a little over a month ago she was going through a heat cycle. This can alter a dog’s behavior and disposition quite a bit. I learned that as she came out of her heat cycle Trillian’s behavior started to noticeably improve. However, there were still times when they were nervous that the two dogs might escalate their playing into fighting. To help them know what to look for to prevent this behavior before it starts I went over a few dog training tips, which you can watch below.

When we were off camera I was able to see a few of the times when Trillian and Mycroft might get into disagreements. To emphasize a point made in the video for the guardians one of the best things that you can do in these situations is redirect their attention and put them into a positive emotional experience. This can be accomplished by simply asking them for a behavior that they know very well like sit and then giving them a yummy treat reward. This changes their attitude quickly and prevents a fight before it can start.

By the end of the session both of the dogs were getting along better and better. Trillian and Mycroft were quickly learning how to use our Petting with a Purpose technique to their benefit by sitting in front of their guardians to get attention. We wrapped up this dog behavior session with Trillian and Mycroft’s Roadmap to Success video, which you can watch below.
