Thor and Roscoe scaled - An Easy Way to Help Fearful Puppies Warm Up to New People Instead of Barking at Them

For this Omaha puppy training session we worked with a pair of pups; 7 month-old Miniature Schnauzer Thor and 8 week old Mini Dachshund Roscoe, sharing tips to help the dogs feel relaxed and comfortable when meeting new people.

Both dogs were leery of meeting us which is not normal behavior in a puppy. I learned that Thor did not participate in puppy classes when he was younger due to Covid. Since he is under 1 year-old, I recommended we sign both pups up for our puppy classes. Since we incorporate socialization time into each class, the positive experiences will be super helpful for both puppies in terms of building up puppy confidence.

We did work with Roscoe in this session, using an easy way to help a puppy feel comfortable around people they were scared of. I wanted to make sure we highlighted this tip to help a fearful puppy meet new people in a positive way so we filmed a free positive puppy training video detailing it all.

It was wonderful to see this formerly anxious puppy come out of hiding and start exploring and investigating me. You could almost see the confidence building in real time. Id love to see the guardians practice having a few guests come over each week to practice this secret to building up the confidence of insecure puppies.

The best thing about this technique to help fearful puppies feel confident around new people is how simple and easy it is. Anyone can do it, even if they arent a professional Miniature Schnauzer or Mini Dachshund puppy trainer.

Beware though, this is an unwanted puppy behavior that will be quick and easy to fix if the guardians act now. Once Thor reaches 9 months, his permnament personality will start to set. Once this is complete, the behavior will be very difficult to change. In some cases, it can only be improved upon, not extinguished permnamently. Id like to see the family arrange for at least 4 guests to visit individually, each week for 4 consecutive weeks. The more they can practice the better as puppy behavior modification is all about repetition in a shorter period of time.

Later in the session, a construction worker came by to do a small repair which set off Thor, charging the door barking territorially like a wild dog. I was able to stop this behavior a few minutes later when the worker left by tossing treats on the ground before Thor had a chance to bark or charge the visitor. Id like to see the guardians arrange for 3-6 guests to visit the house individually, each week for 3-4 weeks so the family can practice this easy way to stop a puppy from charging and barking at guests.

To help the family remember all the positive puppy behavior tips we shared in this in home Omaha puppy training session, we recorded a roadmap to success video that youc an watch below.
