stop dogs from barking at guests

For this Omaha dog training session we worked with one year-old Spanish water dog Luna, sharing the secret to stop dogs from barking at guests at the door.

We had previously gone over a number of fundamentals and gotten to know Luna the week before in our introductory session. When you are attemping to do some behavior modification with a dog, you need to start with the fundamentals.

One of the fundamentals we went over was dog body language cut off signals and consent. These are really important things to understand clearly anytime you’re trying to stop dogs from barking at guests. Often humans are confused as to what causes the dog to bark and respond in a way that can actually contrinute to more barking.

Many people yell “be quiet” or yell when dogs bark, but this approach never works because barking is just a symptom. It’s not the root cause of the behavior.

Luna has already lived in 2 other homes, so it’s quite possible that she feels overly protective of her humans as she’s finally found a home that is a good fit for her.

After recapping the exercises and techniques we had introduced the week before, we were ready to get started on one of Luna‘s guardians primary objectives; stopping Luna’s barking at guests at the door.

How to Stop Dogs From Barking at Guests at the Door

In Luna‘s case, I think she is barking to alert her humans that someone was at the door. And when she heard that knock, it reminded her of other situations where people had come through a door. This is a large catalog of experiences, both good and bad in her mind. And when she barks, things often go away. So barking works. We needed to find a way to help her see that there are other possibilities.

Breaking the pattern is important because when a dog repeats an action over and over, it can be become amplified. It can also quickly becomes a habit. Repeating something over and over is the core action of positive dog training.

I have found an easy way to stop dog barking is to change how the dog feels about the reason they are barking in the first place. To do this, I often like to use desensitization and counter conditioning.

By introducing the trigger sound, the knock, at a low enough level of intensity, while simultaneously distracting Luna with a treat, we were able to stop her from barking. After some practice, we were able to accomplish the same thing without having to hold the treat to her lips. If your dog barks at the door, success comes in small, repeated steps.

The next steps are going to involve her guardians practicing this dog barking exercise a lot. They need to be sneaky, having one of them quietly exit the house through the back and then sneaking around to the front door. Or coordinating with one another so they can practice when they arrive home. We dont want the dog to know its us when we try to stop dogs from barking at people at the door.

If they want to practice this trick to stop when a dog barks at the door it will be important for them to park their car on the street and not make any of the telltale signs that they normally do when they come home. Sounds like jingling keys, whistling, talking, etc are triggers and can start or often contribute to dog barking.

After enough practice, Luna will start to associate the sound of a knock at the door with getting a treat. This is how we change a dog’s emotional response.

While we are using this exercise to stop dog barking, you can use the same technique if your dog barks when they hear the doorbell, a security alarm chime or any other sound.

The most important thing about this easy way to stop dog barking is to go at the dog’s pace. You want to practice the entire exercise without the dog barking at all. This is accomplished by introducing the sound the dog barks at, at a low enough level where the dog does not feel the need to bark.

Then you can gradually start knocking louder or playing the sound of the doorbell recording louder as you do this exercise. ALl you have to do is knock or play ther sound at the right level to master this easy way to stop dog barking.

If your goal is to stop dogs from barking at people at the door, practicing without the dog barking is the most importsnt factor. As you practice, you’ll be able to knock or ring the bell louder working your way up to the full fidelity. But you have to go at the dog’s pace. The most common mistake is making the sound so loud that your dog barks at the door.

The guardians were super happy about how well Luna did with this easy way to stop dog barking. I suggested that they practice it at least 3 times a day in short 1 to 2 minute practice sessions every day. Stopping dog barking is a habit that takes time and consistnet effort. But if you do, the silence is golden.

No one likes it when their dog barks at the door, but often we make things worse by yelling to be quiet or pushing the dog away. But this easy way to stop dog barking is all about rewarding them at the right time. Instead of getting dog barking, you are teaching your dog what you want them to do instead.

Now some people like it when their dog barks at the door as a security measure. For those situations, I like to teach the dog when we want that behavior. That way, your dog barking is on demand as opposed to when your dog wants to bark.

Once Luna no longer barks at the door, we’re going to come back and start teaching her to go to her dog bed and wait there when guests arrive. But the first step to stop dogs from barking at people at the door needs to come first. Since Luna is so smart and has such dedicated people, I think her days of Dog barking will seeon be a distant memory.
