An Easy Way to Stop a Santa Monica Pitbull from Pulling on the Leash on Walks

For this Santa Monica dog training session, we share tips to stop 4 year-old Pitbull Rocky from pulling on the leash on walks.

After discussing a number of dog behavior training tips inside the house, we took Rocky on a walk so that I could show his guardians an easy way to get a dog to stop pulling or lunging on the leash.

Unfortunately there were no large parks within walking distance of his home. We decided to use a small patch of grass outside of Santa Monica high school. This is not the ideal location to teach a dog to stop pulling on a leash, but it was big enough for us to shoot a free positive dog training video of dog walking tips. It was great to see how quickly this technique stopped Rocky from pulling on the leash. Within minutes you could tell that he was more relaxed and the leash pulling had stopped.

I would like the guardians to find a large park that is not too busy to practice this technique daily for one month. It’s really important to only practice this technique at large parks for the first few weeks so that they have enough distance to move away from any triggers that may provoke a reaction. For the first week, the humans need to avoid triggers and focus on leash handling and when to circle. After that, they can start working on cirling near or following triggers and adding in direction.

Its also important to practice in 40-60 minute practice sessions every day for a month straight. This helps the dog practice walking with a loose leash and gives the humans the ability to circle if the dog forgets and pulls on the walk. Fortunately this is an eeasy way to get a dog to walk with a loose leash. You dont have to be a professional Pitbull dog trainer to teach your dog to stop your dog from pulling on the leash if you follow these steps.
