For this Omaha puppy training session we worked with 5 month-old Toy Fox Terrier Zion; sharing puppy playpen training tips.

Zion is a very high energy puppy. He zooms around the room during our puppy classes and didn’t have a problem showing off his wheels during this in-home Omaha puppy training training session either.

We spent the first portion of the session discussing his home life. Zion lives with 4 cats and one of them likes to tease and sometimes play with him while the others don’t. I shared a few tips that should help create a more relaxed home environment like feeding out of a snuffle mat, some creative forms of exercise and some enrichment tips.

Next we were ready to address the main puppy behavior problem; Zion crying in his puppy playpen. We often refer to this playpen as a long-term confinement area or LTCA. This is a safe puppy play area you set up in a quiet part of your home.

I am a huge fan of using a puppy playpen to raise a new puppy. In my opinion setting one of these things is one of the smartest things you can do when getting a new puppy. A puppy play pen is a safe fenced in area your puppy sleeps in eats their meals and where you leave them when you cant watch your pup.

One of the benefits of a puppy playpen is they help puppies learn to practice being calm when they are alone. This usually means your pup is not going to develop separation anxiety and is more confident when apart from you. It also helps reduce puppy chewing the wrong thing as everything inside is safe for your puppy to chew.

While a there are many benefits of a puppy playpen, you still need to do some puppy playpen training if you want to use one. If you just put a puppy inside an LTCA, many pup will protest as they don’t want to be a part from you.

But it’s easy to train a puppy to like their playpen if you create some positive associations. Good news, its easy to do positive puppy playpen training. Read on for some free puppy playpen tips.

I pulled my camera and handed it to the guardian so that I could go over a number of tips to help puppy like being in their playpen. If your puppy doesn’t like their playpen, you should definitely check out the free positive puppy training video below.

I’d like to see the guardian practicing these puppy playpen training exercises a couple of times a day in short successful sessions. Usually I recommend practicing at least 10 fun or positive activities around the puppy playpen for the first two or three days that you introduced it to a new puppy.

These puppy playpen training sessions should be fun and end with the puppy wanting more. The idea is to simply do things in the puppy playpen that the pup finds fun and rewarding. You can toss treats or play the other games I show in the free puppy playpen training video but there are many other ways to help puppies like playpens.

Since Zion is so smart and his mom is so dedicated, I’m guessing it’s only going to take a day or two before he starts thinking about his playpen as a super awesome place to be. Positive puppy playpen training is one of the smartest things a new puppyparent can do to help their puppy grow up into a confirdent adult dog.
