For this Santa Monica dog training session we worked with a 5 year-old Poodle Bichon mix Olivia, stopping her from barking when people ring the door.

I met Olivia outside her home as her super nice guardian saved me a parking spot as parking in this part of Santa Monica is a challenge. I offered her a few treats to make sure she had a positive experience. This is super simple dog behavior trick that works wonders with most dogs.

Once we got inside, I discussed a number of other things that were likely related to the dog barking at sounds outside the home. Many people shush or correct a dog from barking, but since good attention and bad attention are almost the same thing to dogs, this often rewards or amplifies the behavior.

A better way to stop dog barking is to create a positive association with the sound. I like to use counterconditioning to stop dog barking. You can learn how to use positive reinforcement to stop a dog from barking by watching the free dog training video below.

I always love sharing this secret to stop dog barking as its usually so quick. Its also an easy way to get a dog to stop barking, even if you are not a professional Bichon dog trainer.
