How to Train a French Bulldog to Stop Guarding Her Crate

In this Omaha dog training session we worked with a pair of French Bulldogs, Mugsy a five-year-old and Sullivan a six-year-old to stop barking and being reactive when people approached the crate.

After I arrived I sat down to chat with the dogs’ guardian about her main dog behavior concern. I learned that Mugsy was protective of her crate and would disagree with people when they went near it. One of the things that we discussed was moving her crate to a new location that wasn’t in a main walkway in the house.

I also wanted Mugsy to learn how to relax when people approached her kennel so that way the guardian could trust having people come over to let the dogs in and out if she was away from home. To see how I did this you can watch the video below.

When you have a dog that is dealing with reactivity issues the best thing you can do is try to help them learn to trust people by giving them the space to regulate their emotions. Over time this will help them build trust and be able to handle these types of situations on their own without their guardian needing to support them.

To keep up with this good behavior the guardian will want to practice using this training method as often as she can and then start to include new friends and family for training assistance. This will help Mugsy generalize from feeling comfortable with a few people near her crate to all people that come into the home.
