Mortimer - Teaching a Santa Monica Weiner Dog to Stop Barking

For this Santa Monica dog training session we worked with Mortimer, a 7 year-old Dachshund teaching him to stop barking at sounds outside his home.

Mortimer gave me a first hand example of his nuisance barking as soon as I walked in the door. Stopping a dog from barking is a pretty common request I get as one of LA’s Dog Behavior experts.

We started out by going over Mortimer’s daily routine and I discovered a number of things his guardian can do to help him see her as more of an authority figure. Developing a healthy leader follower dynamic is important in any dog house, but especially so when you have a dog who like to bark.

After showing the guardian a number of ways to use positive dog training, how she can disagree with unwanted behaviors and entice Mortimer to do things the guardian likes, we were ready to teach the dog to stop barking at sounds outside his home. One of my favorite ways to teach a dog to stop barking is with counterconditioning.

By using this simple positive dog training technique, we were able to get Mortimer to stop barking when there was a knock at the door in a few minutes. I recommended the guardians make a lit of all the things the dog barks at so they can systematically eliminate the dog from barking at each and every one of them.

To help the guardians remember all the dog behavior secrets I shared with them in this in home dog training session, we shot a roadmap to success video that you can check out below.
