Stopping a Cockapoo from barking at people

In this Omaha dog training session, we worked with a one-year-old Cockapoo named Luna. Our goal was to teach her to stop dog barking, especially at people who walk by her home.

How to Stop Dog Barking

Before we introduced the exercise to stop dog barking, we discussed Luna‘s day-to-day life. Oftentimes dogs bark at people out of boredom. Giving Luna exercise in short sessions several times a day, along with mental activities, can be very helpful.

I also suggested that the guardians keep Luna away from the front of the house or yard. This is especially important when people are likely to pass by. This is called management and while it won’t fix the dog barking problem, it will prevent it from getting worse.

Exercising her dog for 10 minutes before practicing the positive training exercise is a smart idea. This is especially true when many people will walk by the house.

To stop dogs from barking at people, create a positive association. Make sure the dog feels comfortable and relaxed during the encounter. I took out my camera and gave it to one of the children in the family. I wanted him to help me share this tip to stop dogs from barking at people.

The engage disengage game is a wonderful way to stop dogs from barking at people passing by their home. As you can see in the video, this exercise is easy to do. You don’t need to be a professional cockapoo trainer.

Do Cockapoos Bark A Lot?

Cockapoos are a crossbreed of Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. Known for their friendly, cheerful, and vocal personalities, they are also low-maintenance dogs. Additionally, they shed minimally and produce less dander, making them a good choice for those with allergies.

Cockapoos are generally known for being quiet dogs and don’t tend to bark excessively. They are usually calm and well-mannered, but there are situations where they may bark. For example, Cockapoos bark when someone arrives at the door. This signals that a visitor or possible intruder is nearby.

Additionally, if they are left alone for long periods, they may bark out of boredom or frustration. Some Cockapoos can be sensitive and may develop separation anxiety. This is especially true if they get too attached to their owners. In these cases, they might show their distress when left alone.

They may also show other signs of anxiety, like pacing or destructive behavior.

Tips to Stop Dogs From Barking

I want the guardians to practice this secret method to stop dog barking. They should do it once a day for 2 to 3 minutes. This should continue every day for the next two weeks.

If the guardians keep a good distance between Luna and passing people, she will learn to see them positively. With good timing for the marker word and the treat, it won’t take long. Soon, she will stop barking at people walking by her home.

We covered a number of other tips in this in-home dog training session. To help the guardians remember them all, I created a separate write up that includes the roadmap to success video that you can check out with this link.
