Lucy - How to Easily Get a Dog to Come to You in the Yard Automatically

For this Omaha dog training session we shared tips to help 3 year-old Pointer mix Lucy come to her humans when she is in the back yard.

The great thing about this easy way to get any dog to come when its in the back yard is we aren’t asking the dog to do the command. By simply waiting and rewarding the behavior you want, you give the dog motivation to want to do what you ask.

Many dogs learn to not come when called because it represents an end to fun. You ask the dog to come in because its barking at a squirrel and you don’t want the neighbors to be annoyed. The dog listens, then it can’t bark at the squirrel anymore. To the dog, listening = fun stopping; so next time, many dogs simply refuse to come when called.

By using this operant conditioning approach to dog training, the dog sort of trains itself to come and is richly rewarded wen it does. If the guardians use this secret to getting any dog to come a few times a day for a week, they should find the days of the dog not coming when called will be a distant memory.

To help the guardians remember the other dog behavior tips I shared in this in home dog training session we filmed a roadmap to success video.
