Koas Roadmap to Success - An Easy Way to Stop a Dog From Pulling and Lunging on the Leash

For this LA dog training session, we share tips to stop a dog from pulling or lunging on the leash to help 2 year-old Husky Koa behave better on walks.

We spent the first part of the session discussing the dog’s day to day life and needs. We shared tips on exercise, structure and how to effectively communicate in ways that Koa will understand and respect.

I also went over some techniques and exercises to help Koa practice some self restraint and control. One of the issues they wanted to fix was Koa’s wanting to go after the cats. We didnt directly work on that issue as the guardians will need to help Koa see and respect them as leaders before they can work on a more advanced issue like that. Helping Koa practice self restrain and control will go along ways towards helping her stop reacting when the cats are around.

To address Koa’s lunging on the leash problem, we headed out to a nearby parks I could show the guardians how to stop a dog from lunging at other dogs when on the leash. Watch the free dog training video below for many tips to stop leash pulling and lunging.

The secret to stopping a dog from pulling on the leash is all about setting it up for success and teaching it a different way of acting in those situations. As you could see, the distance was a big factor in helping the dog stay calm around other dogs. Additionally getting it some exercise before hand and helping redirect its attention before it starts to act aggressive or reactive to the other dogs are also very important.

After we filmed the video where I shared these secrets to stopping a dog from pulling on the leash, I had the guardians take the leash and practice it themselves until they were getting the same results. This was a great example of how you don’t have to be a professional Husky dog trainer to stop a dog from pulling on the leash. Seeing Koa walking with a loose leash around the other dogs in the park was rewarding and I think comforting for Koa’s guardians to see.

To help the guardians remember all the dog behavior tips we shared in this in home LA dog training session, we recorded a roadmap to success video.
