Dog Gone Problems Dog Trainer Juan Colmenares moved to the U.S. from Cali Colombia when he was only 8 months old.
For as long as he can remember, Juan had always been passionate about the natural world and living creatures. As a child, he wanted to be a Paleontologist and was obsessed with dinosaurs; knowing the names and facts about even the most obscure dinosaurs.
Juan had his first experience with dogs when he was 4 years-old when his family got a Black Lab named Mankato. Since then, his life has been filled with dogs in a personal and professional capacity.
Although dogs always surrounded Juan, he did not develop a passion for dog training until he hit his 20’s. In 2021 Juan became a playroom attendant at a Camp Bow Wow in Colorado Springs. While working there he gained a newfound appreciation for dog body language, behavior, and communication.
During this time, Juan realized that the time spent watching the dogs in the playroom was invaluable information and he decided to shadow a dog trainer to build his skills.
Juan Colmenares; Professional Dog Trainer
Juan began getting the bulk of his hands-on experience working with dogs at a neighboring shelter, having the opportunity to learn through working with many reactive and fearful dogs.
After learning all he could learn at the doggy daycare, Juan decided to seek out a new mentor to be able to advance his dog training knowledge. Shortly after, he secured a training job at Petco and graduated from their Dog Training Instructor Program, centered on positive reinforcement.
In June of 2024, Juan and his partner moved to Omaha with his puppy Sol (pictured below).
Although he was experienced and fully trained, Juan spent the first few weeks at DGP shadowing with the trainers and behavior experts on staff. Even though his experience would have allowed him to go right out into the field, Juan requested some time with the staff to learn how they operate to build on his knowledge base. Juan’s thirst for knowledge is one of the reasons he is such a talented Dog Trainer.
While he was shadowing and training during the day, Juan also went through our Puppy Class Instructor training program in the evenings. This double duty would be more than many people could handle, but Juan’s previous experience and dedication to his craft allowed him to excel.
Upon completing the puppy instructor training program, Juan started leading his own puppy classes teaching lessons from potty training to how to back up on cue. Juan keeps his classes fun while being educational. Having a young puppy of his own helped Juan relate to the trials and tribulations his puppy parents were going through.
Juan works as a Dog Trainer during the day and saves his evenings for the puppies. “I want to schedule more sessions with Juna Colmenares” is becoming a regular request our Booking Coordinator’s hear. His in home dog training clients love his way of explaining the concepts in a way that makes them easy to understand. They also appreiate his patience as he walks them through the exercises; coaching them up until they are getting the same results he does.
One has quickly become a popular Omaha dog trainer. His calendar is getting busier each day. Every time Omaha adds a positive and professional dog trainer, the dogs are the biggest winners. And Omaha came up big when Juan started helping dogs in the area.
One of Juan’s favorite lessons is teaching dogs to stop pulling on the leash! Here he is teaching a Golden Retriever that its better to walk with a loose leash than pull his owner over!
Juan’s engaging personality and personable nature was an instant hit with our clients. His ability to help people understand their dogs and get them to perform or listen to their humans has made him one of the most requested trainers at DGP. Juan received multiple of 5 star reviews on Google in the firts few weeks after starting at DGP and his clients rave about the changes he helped their dogs achieve.
