Jack - Training Tips to Stop Nipping and Jumping

We worked with Jack to help him to stop nipping and stop biting at his owners to stop attention demanding behavior in this Omaha dog training session.

When I first walked in Jack was very calm and didn’t exhibit any nipping behavior. However, as soon as I went to sit down he started to jump and nip at me; while he wasn’t being aggressive and just trying to demand attention, this was an obvious issue for his guardians. This also told me quite a bit about Jack, he was very sensitive to behavior and body postures, so I decided to teach his guardians different ways that they could train Jack to relax and stop nipping.

In the video above you can see that Jack ended up being very relaxed near me. However, in the beginning of the session he was not able to relax and just looking at him or petting him would send him over the edge into attention demanding behavior. To stop attention demanding I needed to help him get desensitized to receiving attention so he could learn how to relax and enjoy it. This way he could slowly gain control over himself when people looked at him and gave him affection.

By the end of the session Jack was learning to look to his guardians for leadership and direction. As a German Shepherd mix trainer I suggest that his guardians keep using our Petting with a Purpose technique to reward him for his good behavior. We wrapped up this dog behavior session with Jack’s Roadmap to Success video, which you can watch below.
