Training a Little Rescue Dog How To Use Doggy Stairs

We worked with a little terrier mix who needed help to go up and down the stairs to get up on to the bed in this Omaha dog training session.
I was able to work with one of the sweetest and most lovable little dogs in this session! Gus is a recent rescue dog and his guardian wanted help teaching him some basic training methods such as the Sit command and the Down command. He also wanted to keep Gus safe by teaching him how to use dog stairs to get up onto the bed and off of the bed. I taught him a technique to train Gus on how to do this, which you can watch below.
As you can see in the video above, Gus was a little hesitant to go up the stairs. First, I would limit the time that you spend training on this to five minutes or less per day. Second, I recommend that you keep him excited about his toy throughout the training session to keep him motivated. Gus wasn’t too motivated by treats so we used his favorite toy to motivate him to go up the stairs and down the stairs. This is a great way to motivate many dogs that are not food motivated!
By the end of the session Gus was looking to his guardian for direction and learning how to sit on command. As a terrier trainer I recommend that Gus’s guardian keeps using our Petting with a Purpose technique to reward Gus for good behavior. We wrapped up this dog behavior session with Gus’s Roadmap to Success video, which you can watch below.
