Domino Martini and Porscha - Teaching Dog to Stay Calm Before Letting them Out of their Kennels

For this Omaha dog training session we showed the guardians how to add structure to letting dogs out of the kennel and tips to stop 2 year-old French Bulldog Domino (left) from being possessive or guarding high value items from 8 year-old Shih Tzu Porscha and 1 year-old French Bulldog Martini.

Because Domino has attacked Porscha, the family has kept them separated and actually had her spend time at a relatives house. When the dogs were in the same home, either Porscha or Domino was kenneled. Martini is the swing dog who gets along with both.

We started out by talking about how to establish a healthy leader follower dynamic by adding rules and structure. You can have a more relaxed situation when you only have one, maybe two dogs. But when you have a pack, setting the tone via rules and structure is super important. Especially when one dog is attacking the other.

When we finished, I showed the guardians how to release a dog from its kennel in a structured way that helps the dog stay calm. You can learn how to teach a dog to stay calm before leaving the kennel in the free dog training video below.

Many dogs act aggressive when in an unbalanced state of mind. Excited may seem happy, and it is most of the time, but it can also lead to problems. So the more structure you can add, along with activities that help the dog practice self control, can greatly help many aggressive dogs. This is the case with all dogs, not just for people who specialize as French Bulldog trainers

Another issue that Domino had was resource guarding various objects, especially high value chew items. I handed my camera over to the guardian so I could share tips to stop resource guarding in dogs.

The guardians will need to practice the drop exercise when Domino has low value items in her mouth. This is a frequently overlooked component when it comes to stopping resource guarding in dogs. Once she has a strong drop command, the guardians will be able to start practicing the remaining steps to eliminate her resource guarding behavior.

To help the guardians remember all the dog behavior tips I shared in this in home dog training session, we recorded a roadmap to success video that you can check out below.
