Copper - How to Train a Dog to Stop Resource Guarding

In this Omaha dog training session we worked with a two-year-old Australian Shepherd named Copper stop resource guarding.

After I arrived I sat down to chat with Copper’s guardians about their main dog behavior concerns. They were primarily concerned about Copper resource guarding toys and other objects that he would pick up or find in the home. I wanted to show them how to trade an object that Copper was guarding for a treat reward, so I taught them the exercise in the video below.

As you can see in the video Copper didn’t even attempt to resource guard at all! This was great news, however it doesn’t mean that he is all better. The guardians will want to continue to practice working with him each day to help him make the positive association between dropping a high value item that he picked up for a treat.

By the end of the session Copper was relaxing and looking to his guardians for leadership and direction. To keep up with this good behavior they will want to continue to enforce the new rules and structure that we went over during the session. We wrapped up this dog behavior session with Copper’s Roadmap to Success video, which you can watch below.
