Chewie - Training a Little Yorkie How To Handle Separation Anxiety

In this Omaha dog training session we worked with Chewie a two-year-old Yorkie and Chihuahua cross to help stop separation anxiety.

After I arrived I chatted with the guardian to find out her main dog behavior concern. I learned that she recently moved to a new home and was planning to move again in a little over a year. During this time period her dog’s separation anxiety had gotten worse. It is common for dogs to have an increase in separation anxiety when switching homes because it is such a major change in their routine. To help Chewie overcome his separation anxiety I worked on slowly having the owner leave, which you can watch in the video below.

As you can see in the video, Chewie was watching his guardian when she put on her coat and went through her other routine behavior before leaving the house. But he was able to stay nice and calm, which we can tell by seeing that his tail was nice and low and he wasn’t giving many stress signals.

To keep up with this good behavior the guardian will want to keep slowly increasing the amount of time that she leaves the home. This will give Chewie a firm foundation to feel comfortable while his guardian leaves, knowing that he can be calm until she comes home. We wrapped up this dog behavior session with Chewie’s Roadmap to Success video, which you can watch below.
