Scooter and Bernie - Teaching a Dog to Drop, Leave it and Tips to Stop Countersurfing

For this Omaha in home dog training session we teach 1 year-old Aussiedoodle Bernie (on the right with his roomie 5 year-old Schnoodle Scooter) the drop it command, leave it command and share tips to stop him from countersurfing.

Teaching a dog to drop should done around the same time you teach a dog the leave it command as they are somewhat related. Training a dog to drop is asking the dog to give up something it already has possession of. Training a dog to leave it is asking the dog to stop its attempt or interest in acquiring something not yet in their possession.

Many people confuse the two which is why I often show people how to get a dog to drop things before I teach them how to get a dog to leave it alone in the first place. But since dogs are bound to get into something you don’t want them to have, mastering the drop and leave it commands is something every dog guardian should do.

As an added bonus, the free dog training video above includes tips to stop a dog from countersurfing.

To help the guardians remember all the other dog =behavior tips we shared in this at home dog training session, we shot a roadmap to success video that you can check out below.
